Rufus Lawrence

Given a map of Riemann surfaces, Hurwitz theorem relates the genera of the two surfaces to the degree of the map and its 'ramification'. In this talk I will explain these concepts in more detail, approaching the problem from the perspective of complex analysis and topology. In the second half of the talk I will describe a more algebraic approach in terms of line bundles, and attempt to explain why the two approaches are essentially equivalent.
