Using tools from algebraic geometry we can obtain many important results in tensor decompositions. In this talk we present some recent results on determining the (border) rank of a tensor and uniqueness of a tensor decomposition, which are obtained by studying properties of the secant varieties of the Segre varieties and Veronese varieties, and we propose some open problems in tensor decompositions which could be solved by further studies of these varieties.
