Periodic motives on the plane can have different groups of symmetries: some motives are only preserved by some translation while some admit rotational or axial symmetries. These groups are called wallpaper groups and they only exist 17 of them. We will discuss this classification, while explaining how to recognize them, using the notion of orbifolds.
