Categorification, quantum groups and coloured braids

In this talk I will introduce the concept of categorification and the main ideas in quantum topology that led to its appearance. As an example I will present a categorification of quantum gl(n) and use it to obtain an invariant of braids whose strands are coloured by positive integers.
