It is possible to study groups from a topological point of view thanks to their classifying spaces. This approach leads to the definition of finiteness properties of groups. These properties were first introduced by C. T. C. Wall in 1956. This talk aims to explain the definition and to give clues about why it is interesting. Thus, I will discuss the finiteness properties of usual groups, in particular of Gromov hyperbolic groups and I will provide examples of groups with exotic finiteness properties.
