\noindent We will survey the status of issues related to the
integral closure of algebras, ideals and modules, motivated by the
role this notion plays in several problems of current interest of
commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. 
 It will include a
discussion of direct construction processes dealing with
bottlenecks and opportunities. The development of settings whereby
different approaches can be compared will be emphasized, since it
leads to non-traditional complexity measures. Hard counts of what
might be expected at the end of various constructions, in several cases
of interest, will be given.
