This will be a survey of the area described in the title. We will explain a general conceptual picture involving "moment maps" and review some known results, for bundles, toric manifolds and Kahler-Einstein manifolds. In the last part of the talk we will discuss open problems, both analytical and algebro-geometric, in the field.
